POLESTAR NEGATIVE_

CAN CARBON GIVE LIFE?

Inspired by capsules and trapping air, the Polestar Negative is designed with the notion of showing off design through exposed inner functions using transparency. Creating a sort of air capsule, trapping carbon.

CAPSULE ENCLOSURE

First design concepts attempt to create modular, transparent, volumes that express carbon and technology. Carbon expression is at the center of such sketch volumes. Emphasizing functional, reductionist aesthetics of Polestar.

CAPSULE THEME

The first design direction for the Polestar Negative was juxtaposing modularity with clear visual divisions to create contrasts. In line with carbon’s black and creating a black and white contrast aesthetic consistent throughout the whole design.

IDEATIONS DIRECTION 1

VISUAL DIVISION

The final design direction focuses on creating a more iconic design, reimagining and predicting what the is the face of the future of Polestar, yet staying consistent with bold lines, emphasizing functionality and technology, not power, through design aesthetics and translucency.

IDEATIONS DIRECTION 2

VISUAL DIVISION

DEFINED IDEATIONS

Final ideations depict a more streamlined design with strong architectural bodies, streamlining inclination, emphasizing the low, yet powerful open mouth collecting carbon. Potent creases juxtapose clearly with Polestar surfacing as power is highlighted through functionality and design.

STRONG LINES

Powerful lines create consistency to powerful Polestar design language.

BOLD TRANSPARENCY

Translucency is at the very center of the design on the Polestar Negative, juxtaposed with bold lines that emphasize tech shown off under the translucent body of the car. Creating a visual spectacle of Polestar design aesthetics and futuristic technology.

The interior design primarily focused on integrating carbon expression and exposing carbon alchemy throughout the interior. As a result, this could create interesting color & trim combinations of grayscale, black and white contrast through textiles, and visually flexible materials integrated into seats and deco elements.

INTERIOR DESIGN

INTERNAL CARBON TUNNELING

INTERIOR IDEATIONS

Developed interior ideations focus on articulating a central carbon tunnel between seats, while also taking into account material changes on deco elements.

MODERN ALCHEMY

Interior main tunnel heavily emphasized functional elements and chemical reactions of carbon solidification.

CHROMO-CARBON INTERIOR

Staying true to creating a consistent visual story throughout the design, carbon expression is heavily evident through chromophormous textiles on deco parts and chairs. The central carbon tunnels also solidify carbon, which can be expressed through the transparent shells around them.

COLOR & TRIM

CARBON TUNNELS

Carbon tunnels that go along centrally in the interior, solidify carbon by boiling it with liquid. As it is boiled, certain pure carbon particles attach, to create rock-like formations. They are then extracted and broken down later.

Color & trim is explored heavily throughout the interior by using sustainable materials such as recycled PET fibers, flax, and the most speculative, transparency, and chromophormous textiles. Such textiles change color and can get their color from ink processed from carbon soot. Creating a consistent visual story between the exterior and interior of increasing carbon black color as carbon consumption increases.
